Currently, The Spotlight Is On...

Mike Bavoso, W6YDE

As your president of The Central California DX club, I will be the first to submit my profile. This new section of our web site and quarterly email newsletter will highlight one of our members. This is intended to fill up space and bring some interest to our club's newsletter. Hi hi!

I am 57 years old and have been in amateur radio since the age of 11, in 1964. I don't do phone; I am 100% CW/QRP. I have several awards and keep finding old ones to reinvent with a new slant... i.e. CW-WAS/qrp or CW-DXCC/qrp... and so on. All CW is sent with three of the Begali line of paddles...the Magnetic Classic is used every day with the Graciella and the Sculpture used now and then... Cheap paddles don't work at high speeds for me.

I use search and pounce for DX plus needed calls, with the search and pounce all being done by memory keying. (I make mistakes always at the right time.) I do have some CW conversations occasionally, providing that he or she does not make too many spelling mistakes and can send and copy between 25 and 30 WPM. But these hams are hard to find and to copy any slower is not possible, due to the fact that I can hear the individual dots and dashes. I am a "frequently used word" or "letter combo sounding" CW operator, and misspelled words, or a word like lawnmower, plus lots of mistakes stops me cold.

I have a very understanding wife, which is a big help! I have a few antennas at my QTH, but what I really like to do is mountain topping and camping along with amateur radio. Two most favored rigs are the YAESU FT817ND and the ELECRAFT KX-1. Both of these little QRP rigs can go with me anywhere.

In the picture above, I spent a few days on Mt. Pinos between 7,400 and 8,400 feet. With this 3-element 5-band Yagi (yagi in a bag) and with only 5 Watts, a solar panel plus an old car battery, I was working the world with 569 and 579 reports.

73, and good luck, Mike/W6YDE
